Class Review 8: Owning is Maintaining

This is actually what the students should get in the reading lesson since first semester.  Hopefully, the students can get that expectation to understand the text easier.  It is because this intensive reading apply the strategy for make it true.  The question is, why the students get it in the writing lesson?  What kind of lesson it is, does not the matter.  The point is, intensive reading could be felt and learned by the students.  Honestly, for understanding the Indonesian text is difficult enough, no wonder if understanding the English text will be much-much harder.  This happened in all the previous critical reviews, what the students wrote were not like what the lecturer expected.  One of the possibilities why the students got those kind of difficulties are because intensive reading was never taught to the students even in the reading lesson itself before.  So in the other word, intensive reading in the writing lesson is very beneficial for the students to understand the text. 
One different brain and mind surely will have one different opinion as well about something.  When there are four to five students who work together and share their opinions about one topic, so automatically there are five opinions and the students can combine those opinions become one unity opinion that surely will be more perfect than the single opinion.  That is the strategy in intensive reading of writing lesson.  The class is divided into some groups that consist of four to five students and the students will discuss the sentence one by one from the text, it starts from the tittle.  Then they will share their opinions about what is the sentence talking about, what is the thinking of the writer and what is the writer purpose.  This surely will help the students to get closer with the text, moreover the text was written by the great person, “S. Eben Kirksey” with the tittle “Don’t Use Your Data as a Pillow”.  Who is he?
Eben Kirksey is Lecturer in Environmental Humanities at the University of New South Wales. His research explores the political dimensions of imagination as well as the interplay of natural and cultural history.  Eben also is finding modest examples of biocultural hope. Working as a participant observer at multiple nodes of the Amphibian Ark, a global assemblage of biosecure holding facilities and cryogenic banks, and he found that everyday life support technologies and routines of care have saved certain species of frogs from extinction.  His first book is Freedom in Entangled Worlds: West Papua and the Architecture of Global Power.  This is another evidence that Indonesia has something interesting which can make foreigner curious and researching, but unfortunately the Indonesian itself do not recognize about that. 
Few weeks ago Prof. William.D Davies come here and explained about one of Indonesian native language, “Madurese”.  Why the foreigner who do this? Why foreigner always interest to research the conflict (For example like what happen in West papua) and something good in Indonesia (variety of languages), while Indonesia ignore it.  Forget it and back to the intensive reading strategy in the writing lesson that consists of five students.
First, Siti Fadlun explained what she thought about the tittle.  She said that data in the tittle is the information about something, while the meaning of pillow in the tittle is something that is used for buttressing the people’s head when they are sleeping.  So from Fadlun’s opinion about those two key words the groups could make the analogy.  Do not use the data only when needed, because it looks like a pillow which is used only when people want to sleep.
Second, Anggi Millady continued the discussion and shared theanother definition.  The definition of data based on Anggi’s opinion is Information resource, while pillow is something which makes the people comfortable when they sleep or lay so that they can be relax.  So the analogy is do not use the data as the cover when people make mistakes.
Third opinion was from Nurjannah.  She defined data as the resource of the information which consist of the knowledge and pillow as the comforting rest.  So the analogy could be taken from those definitions.  People do not believe too much to the data, because everything can be sabotaged by the writer, the real example is like what happen in the Christopher Colombus information.
The last was from Aldha Williyan who defined the word data as the mass of information that is contained by knowledge and it cannot be got without struggle.  Pillow based on Aldha’s opinion is as the comforting rest.  The analogy is, data is something holy because people need struggle if they want to get it, so data should have the higher position.  In the other words mean that data is more valuable, “Why should be pillow not bed?”
The conclusion of the discussion is students have to be critical people who are not easy to believe something.  The illustration between pillow and bed actually can help the students to understand the meaning of the tittle.  People can still sleep without pillow, because pillow is optional, but they cannot sleep if there is no bed, because bed is obligatory.  So data is obligatory not optional.
This paragraph will not still talk about the strategy but it will talk about this big issue about West Papua.  West Papua is one of the provinces in Irian  Island.  West Papua accompanies Papua province in Irian Island, because there are only two provinces in Irian Island.  They are West papua which is located in the west of Irian Island and the second is Papua province which is recognize as the biggest province in Indonesia.
People are still confuse, which one is Irian and which one is Papua.  Irian is an Island, but Papua in the name of the province.  The place which called by Irian Jaya is only the West Papua.  West Papua was West Irian Jaya, but the people over there want that it should be changed with West Papua, so there is no longer West Irian Jaya in Irian Island.  Eventually, West Irian Jaya changed to be West Papua at February 7th 2007 and it declared by the DPR chief of West Irian Jaya, Jimianus Ijie.  The reasons of this changing is about the people preference.  People prefer Papua to Irian Jaya.  The other reason is about people predictions, people think that the name of Irian Jaya is the dignitary manipulation, so they minimalize it with this changing if name.
Indonesia held their independence when Indonesia was led by Ir.Soekarno, so automatically there is a Soekarno role in West Papua case.  If people want to know and understand what happened between Indonesia and West papua in Soekarno era, people indirectly should know what TRIKORA is. TRIKORA is the abbreviation from Tri Komando Rakyat, it was pioneered by Ir.Soekarno in 1961.  TRIKORA is the effort of Indonesia to unite West Papua with Indonesia.  So in the other word the purpose of TRIKORA is to prepare and do the military operation for West Papua, in order it can be one of the parts of NKRI.  At December 19th 1961 Soekarno announced the TRIKORA by chosing Jendral Soeharto as the military high commander in Yogyakarta.  The conclusion is Indonesia held their independence without West Papua. 
This is what happened when Indonesia held their independence.  Indonesia had been colonized by Netherland and Japan, but Indonesia got the independence from Japan.  Even though the condition was like that but Netherland still controlled West Papua, then Netherland helped Indonesia to be independent country without colonization from japan and also without West Papua. This becomes logic when people can analyze.  If Japan still existed in Indonesia at that time, Japan will take West Papua from Netherland.  So, because of that Netherland help Indonesia to be independent.  If Indonesia power and japan power were compared at that time, surely Indonesia was nothing, no wonder Netherland did this.  Whatever the problem at that time, Indonesia could take West Papua back to Indonesia at May 1st 1963.
Unfortunately, even though West Papua is Indonesia, there is still problem.  OPM (Organisasi Papua Merdeka) is the organization which climes the independent.  This becomes worry for Indonesia because many countries support West Papua to get their independence.  England, Australia, Netherland, and surely America support this organization.  The evidence is like what happened at April 28th 2013 when OPM office in England was opened formally.
The conclusion from those explanations is about what Indonesia has to do.  Indonesia did everything to take West Papua back to Indonesia, even though they have to fight with Netherland who is stronger but Indonesia still fought and could take West Papua back.  So, Owning is Maintaining, Indonesia is the owner of West Papua who should do everything to keep West Papua.  That is not the only one response, Indonesia have to think also how to be good owner.  Indonesia has to make West Papua prosperous as the other province in Indonesia, so there will not the social jealousy.
